where's waldo

If these photos look messier or more rushed than usual, it's because it was (although 99% of my photos are rushed). I'm not a morning person, or a Monday person, so yesterday morning was particularly hard on me, especially since Day 1's are my academic days (sigh). Although, a highlight, and the reason I was rushed, was that afterschool I took it upon myself to treat myself to a movie I've been dying to see: The Skeleton Twins! I uploaded my review last night, so there are my thoughts on it in detail, but basically I adored it, and I love love love Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader! Sadly, all good things come to an end, as when I returned from a nice solo film trip, I was welcomed home with Chemistry, Physics, and English homework. Oh, sigh.

It is now the second week of school, which is my cue to try and step up my game on what I'm wearing! I'm a believer in wearing whatever I feel like, no matter the occasion, so I tend to like to dress up for school (especially after the first week is over. I agree with many beauty gurus when they say that the first week everyone tries their best. After that, people start to relax, which is the best time to amp it up). Although, while I wanted to look nice, it is Monday, and I did know I was going to be chowing down on buttery popcorn afterschool, so I wore my loose and comfy boyfriend jeans. Originally, I was going for a grungier look, and I paired my red striped shirt with a flannel around the waist, but last minute decided to look more put together, and just simply did that by wearing my ankle booties. I went really minimal with the jewelry, and as much as I'd like to have a smart explanation to why I did that, it's simply just because I was running late this morning.

Two perfect examples of classic wardrobe pieces: the striped shirt and short necklaces. Do not let fashion magazines and other people bring you down: stripes are life. Don't listen to the haters that say it makes you look larger: the key is in the fit! As for short necklaces, the layering opportunities are endless, and they're so delicate you can pair them with any outfit.

I spent this summer on a wild hunt for the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans. I'm shorter and not really on the thin side, so this was like Mission Impossible for me. Luckily I stumbled upon these at Zara and fell in love. I never thought I'd wear any other jeans except for skinnies, but now I see what I've been missing out on. Now all I need is the actual boyfriend to go with the boyfriend jeans.

These boots look like they're on the verge of death but that just means I really love them (we all show affection in different ways).

the skeleton twins

Movies I've Seen in 2014 - The Skeleton Twins

Starring: Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig

Supporting: Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell

Directed by: Craig Johnson

Plot: After going 10 years without talking to each other, the Dean twins reconnect when Milo (Bill Hader), a gay, struggling actor living in LA, attempts suicide. While the initial first meeting was a little shaky, Maggie (Kristen Wiig), Milo's twin still living in their hometown, dealing with her own demons, invites Milo to stay at her place for a while. Slowly, both twins come face to face with their inner struggles, the past, and what went wrong in their relationship.

REVIEW

It is rare to find a dark comedy that truly finds the correct balance between heavy themes and deep material, as well as lighthearted jokes and actual, well, comedy. The Skeleton Twins is the first "dark comedy" I've seen in a while that manages to find the balance. Is it perfect, no, some scenes can often come across as cheesy or predictable, but as a whole, it's a relatable story that really tugs at the heart strings all while making your stomach ache with laughter at the same time.

To delve into that topic a little bit deeper, I'll begin with discussing the serious part of Skeleton Twins. A main theme throughout the movie is suicide, and understanding the reason behind it. After all both main characters contemplate it at the beginning of the movie, as well as face demons and depression throughout. Little messages and life lessons are laced throughout this major topic, such as, displayed in a beautiful speech spoken by Hader's character, Milo, the feeling of "peaking in high school" and not achieving your dreams that you dreamed so much about, and just, to put it frankly, being nothing. As a person with unreasonably high hopes for myself, this speech resonated and hit home to me, something that Skeleton Twins tends to do quite often inbetween subtle one-liners. Usually such dark topics are put in dramas; after all, who wants to joke about suicide? Well, The Skeleton Twins does, and to be honest, without Hader and Wiig as the lead, the witty banter might not have been as successful. The key behind the movie is the subtle lines and jokes that the twins make while still dealing with the mess that they call their lives. A perfect example is Milo's suicide note, a scene way early on in the film. All it says is simply "To whom it may concern: See you later :)" I nearly choked on my drink reading that onscreen. It's that exact funny, dark humour that continues throughout the movie.

A big kudos to Craig Johnson to putting so much emphasis and care into his characters. Another huge part of Skeleton Twins that made it so fantastic was the fact that each and every character wasn't just another voice in the background. Sure, Hader and Wiig lead the pack, but that doesn't mean that the background characters are left voiceless and one-dimensional. It's true, while some of the writing is absolutely, unbelievably fantastic (the lip-sync scene between Hader and Wiig is still playing in my mind), there are some scenes that teeter on the typical, and might not have worked quite as well had it not been played by such amazing actors and had the characters not been so lovable. That's his one true downfall, to be frank: the characters are great, but sometimes the plotline is not. He adds layer upon layer to the two main actors, some of them unneeded or unnecessary (SPOILER: Wiig's character claims to have cheated with 3 men. Yes, I know this happens, but seriously, lowering it down to 1 wouldn't have made a difference. At all.) Although, I'll end on a positive note. Johnson succeeds in bringing stereotypes down (even if he can't do the same with plots), as Luke Wilson's typical husband role is more someone you can imagine seeing down the street than a Hollywood suburban white knight. The same goes to Ty Burrell, who gives a subtle yet strong performance.

This would not be a review without a (not-so) brief opinion on the powerhouse performances of the two leads. Both Hader and Wiig prove to audiences that they are far more than just SNL alums, and have talents that go far beyond that of comedy. Their improv roots do help as their deadpan scenes are hilarious and, like mentioned, a specific lip-sync scene will become an instant classic. Seriously, I dare you to watch that scene and not laugh, smile, or have it remind you of your own crazy antics when you lip-sync. Anyways, both actors succeed in bringing depth to two very challenging roles: characters that are broken, but can only mend each other. Twins that deal through pain with sarcastic remarks, but have sorrow behind their eyes whilst delivering said remarks. Their chemistry as a team is amazing. You truly feel the brother-sister relationship, even as the moods differ. It's no shocker they can have a witty banter, or just all-out funny scenes with each other (they did share the SNL stage for years), but it's also refreshing to see that they can have deep, emotional scenes, where they show their inner selves and pour their hearts out to each other. Wiig is fantastic, making what would be a not-so-likable character into someone you can sympathize with. Her performance is perfectly understated, and it's nice to see Wiig approach humour and drama without so much glitz and glamour. Hader is the real standout here. In his first huge dramatic role, he is a revelation. While many of us know Hader for his Stefon character, Milo is nothing close to that. Hader shapes Milo into a real human, and not into, as his character puts it "another tragic gay cliche." His deadpan delivery is spot on, delivering each and every one-liner (such as gems, like "I can't wait to be the creepy gay uncle") perfectly and without too much theatrics. Yes, he does have his huge moments to shine (Hader in drag is great), but the real surprise is when Hader shares his soul onscreen. You see pain behind his eyes even when he's alright, and when he admits his vulnerability onscreen, he is at his rawest moment. This is truly a great first role to a fantastic career in movies for Hader.

All in all, The Skeleton Twins is a fantastic contradiction. It has unrelatable plots with relatable (and lovable) characters. The darkest of themes is joined by the lightest jokes. It's a rare and great gem, that is definitely worth seeing. Admittedly, it's not for those who cannot stand such a simple plot. The magic is not in the climax, but in the relationships and chemistry between Hader and Wiig. It's in the snappy comebacks, and tense silences. It connects with people, and allows audiences to realize that, yes, we all go through sadness, and that maybe we're all just trying to figure out how to deal with it.  It's an indie that, while it may not be nominated during award season, it's one that will resonate in your heart. (P.S. if all that doesn't convince you, Boyd Holbrook is amazing eye candy.)

batter up

The weekend is here and I am filled with cheer (seriously, why am I not a songwriter)! I got to rest up after a week of sleeping at 2 and waking up at 6:45, and I finally do not feel like zombie in the morning. To add to that, I met up with my friend, Grace, who, even though I saw her almost every day in the summer, I was quite glad to see since we don't go to the same school. She helped me catch up on shoots (as well as she might help me on a surprise project tomorrow. Exciting!), and then we talked about classes and school and anything that came to mind over some Starbucks before she had her volunteer. Once she left, I went downtown to meet up with my parents. My mom had some extra Bay points, resulting in $110 off at Topshop (godbless)! Needless to say, I spent the rest of the day shopping. After a few hours of browsing and buying, I made my way on home. As of right now, I am ending off my Saturday in the best way possible: by watching the season premier of SNL hosted by Chris Pratt. Aaaaah, I'm hooked on a feeling...

Shopping days are one of the hardest things to dress for. On one hand, you want to look nice since you're going to a nice store, and there's just this constant need to look to impress at a nice store. But on the other hand, you're just going to keep on changing in and out of those clothes. I did my best to accommodate to both needs with this look. There's nothing easier to slip on than a shirt and jeans. I went with a classic baseball tee (my latest obsession), and just went really minimal with the jewelry, since I didn't want a huge hassle while changing. I rolled up my skinny jeans to make my look more polished, and wore ankle booties to accentuate the polished effect. Finally, I tied a flannel around my waist, simply because one can never go wrong with flannel.

I cannot seem to get my shirt in place. Oh well. Like shirt, like owner.

I will never stop tying flannel around my waist. There's something so effortless yet put together about that look that I adore. Sad news though, I will have to retire these jeans as it's on the verge of dying and ripping everywhere. Good news: I got two new pairs in dark blue and black! Yes!

Also, while we're talking about retiring and buying new items, I got myself a new pair of black ankle booties! Do not fret, I am not retiring these as these booties are no longer shoes to me, but like a close, dear friend. I am, however, just adding a new pair to the family. I need black boots that are fresh, and clean, and don't look like they've been stepped on a thousand times.

speckled mind

Last day of school is here, YEEES! While I am happy to be back, it's obviously a good feeling to have the weekend again, and to have nothing to do. Fortunately, I ended the week off with my favourite of my two-days (aka how my school works: Day 1/ Day 2), Day 2. I opened up the day with Acting, where we had to build a bridge out of newspapers and tape (I think I've found my calling as a terrible architect), and we (surprisingly) succeeded in building our bridge, but we mostly just laughed at our hideous tape monster. Next was Sociology, and we had a long and interesting debate on different stereotypes and how they were True or False. I can gladly predict this will be my favourite class, possibly of all-time. After lunch was math, and I can't really say anything too kind about quadratic formulas. I ended off with a fortunate Free Block, spent going to Starbucks and seeing past graduates. By the time it was time to go home, it was pouring (and I mean pouring) rain, so I just spent some time relaxing at home, with a cup of tea and two good friends.

Like I mentioned, it was pouring rain. Hence, I was unable to take these outfit pics yesterday and had to take them this (Saturday) morning. It was so bad, the entire front of my pants were completely soaked (I actually looked like I was wearing two different pairs of jeans). Anyways, I knew in the morning before school that it would be rainy, so I decided to dress casual and a bit warmer. I wore my simple grey jeans that I rarely wear, and went with a classic grey shirt. The real winner of this outfit, is the knit speckled cardigan I'm wearing, which is actually a birthday gift from last year! I wore a circle scarf (my fall essential aside from ankle booties and military jackets), and to make the outfit more interesting, I wore my long crystal necklace underneath. Lastly, knowing it was gonna rain, I just wore my comfy and durable riding boots.

Words can't explain how soft and warm this sweater is, my god.

I just found out this morning one of the zippers on the boot is slightly broken. Boo. Now I have to get it fixed, sigh.

one day i'll fly away

It's only my third day of school, yet I have managed to a) annoy a teacher (I think. Note to teachers if you one day read this: just because I'm loud does not mean I'm stupid), b) procrastinate on my homework (like seriously, I have done the safety unit for the last 3 years, must I do it again), and c) get annoyed until I'm on the verge of tears. That's a good start. Despite all that though, I am happy that it's much easier to get back into schedule. I have enjoyed my English class quite a bit (fun students + fun teacher, ayee), and while I didn't get the Chem teacher I wanted, I'm glad to have some good friends in that class. French is a party, and I'm learning to enjoy Physics, so I guess you could say class-wise, things are going just fine. Although, figuring out which teacher to become a service student for has been tougher than I imagined. My all-time favourite teacher already has about 5 other kids lining up to service for him, and another one of my choices is unfortunately replaced by a substitute that makes me want to rip my hair out. Sigh. At least I got to watch the premiere of How to Get Away with Murder tonight (I swear this is not something to be worried about). For a show that's basically like Suits but in college and revolved around murder, it's wickedly good.

The moment that Pumpkin Spice starts returning to every food joint, I know that fall is here, and that it is time to bring back one of my favourite accessories: circle scarves. For some reason, I don't feel that regular scarves look good on me. They're cute, but I can never manage to wrap them nicely, so that's why circle scarves are like a gift sent from the heavens. They add a cute, cozy feel to any look, and on a simple look, like this one, it just adds depth and makes it more interesting. I wore one of my favourite patterned sweaters, that is oh-so cozy and perfect for the fall, either on it's own or on top of a button down. For my bottoms, I wore a pair of light blue skinnies that I really should wear more often since my dark blue jeans are actually dying. As usual, I am almost never seen without either heels or boots, or boots with heels, so I finished off the look with my black ankle booties.

Fun fact: I actually got this sweater, not from Topshop, but from Topman. I find that Topman, and other stores I shop at with a guys' section, have the best selection for graphic shirts and interesting sweaters. They're oversize, and extremely soft and cozy, and honestly that alone makes me love guys' clothing so much. To add on to that though, they tend to have more intriguing patterns and designs as well. Needless to say, at least 50% of all my fall/winter sweaters are from the Men's section. No shame.

Whilst taking pictures at a nearby complex, we were photobombed by the most adorable army of little kids! At first, I thought they would just disregard us, but I overheard the first boy (in the red, pictured in the first photo) saying "They're taking pictures! PHOTOBOMB!" And that was when my heart melted. I'm (sadly) not going to upload all the photos with them in the background, as you would probably die of cuteness. After much giggling and some stares whilst we finished shooting, I thought that that would be goodbye; I was wrong. They proceeded to follow us like little spies, hiding every time we turned around, equipped with their little toy swords and such. I'm pretty sure I squealed at least a dozen times.

maroon melancholy

Note to self: when switching out of courses, pray that your school does not have a strike. Otherwise, the wait for course change can be up to 3 or 4 hours. Thankfully, mine was only an hour, hour and a half max. Anyways, I have officially gone through my entire schedule once! Today was a Day 2, and because it's still the first week of school, I still had to go to homeroom earlier (it's only 20 minutes earlier, but it's 20 minutes of extra sleep). My first class was Acting, and words cannot explain how happy I was to realize who was in my class. Familiar faces, along with people I wanted to get to know better, my class was filled with people who weren't only good actors, but funny and lighthearted, as well as hardworking (well some of them anyways). It's gonna be a fun year. After that was Sociology! Once again, I was blessed to be put in a good class with a teacher who last time I had him favoured me. Good teacher who likes me and a super interesting and fun course? Check and check! After lunch, was pre-calc, and while I usually hate math, I've been lucky this year in that I got a really chill math teacher who actually teaches (note: my last year teacher spent 20 minutes every day doing nothing. Nothing. I almost cried at how little I learned). Lastly, I had marketing, and that is where my luck ends. I waited about an hour to drop the course, and now I am left with a free block, which might turn into a block where I can be a teacher's assistant. Needless to say, I celebrated my not-so-bad classes by having a Booster Juice with some friends.

Vancouver has been really annoying me lately with the fact that it pours rain every morning, and it is incredibly warm by the time I leave school. Do I freeze to death as well as get drenched on my way to class or melt my skin off on my way home? Decisions, decisions! That still doesn't stop me from getting into the fall mood by dressing in some layers! A trench coat is one of my absolute wardrobe essentials, so I paired one with a classic white tee, and to add some nice depth (as well as give me a cute, thin cover-up in school) I wore a denim shirt on top of it. Obviously, I can't wear a white shirt without adding layered necklaces, so I did just that.I haven't worn my maroon jeans in a while, and I thought they'd be more interesting than just basic blue, and because it was raining and I didn't want to be too fancy (yet), I just wore Doc Martens.

Trust me when I say that despite these obviously staged photos, Jessica is one of the most annoying people I have ever met... and that is why we click so well. Despite only meeting in grade 8 (where she lied and told me she was great at French, only to copy my work the next class, thanks Jess), I can easily say it feels like I've known her for a lifetime. After waiting for course changes with me, Jess came by to have some Booster Juice and help me take pics. To be honest, this has surprisingly been the most we have done in a hangout in a while. That's pretty shocking since I see Jess almost weekly. We usually just take naps when we meet up. Yep, these pics don't really fit our friendship very well.

But this one kinda does. Heart ya, Jess.
